Post by: scsijon on November 13, 2018, 09:08:15 PM
Looks like i'm first this time (for a change). Luck of the draw to be looking at the Easy site at the wrong time I guess.

Installed to a memory stick ok.

First problem found is when starting, the Initial Menu doesn't show the Easy Version, just shows a ${distro_version} where 0.9.8 should be;

Second Problem is during First Startup and initial settings the Set Hostname:done screen's OK box is partially hidden behind a ?yellow? Processing, please wait....
You need to find and click it before something further happens (like in my case the Firewall Setup Screen appearing).

And we are through to JWM
Menu's look OK, no strange characters or off line spaces
And Seamonkey can find the Easy webpage
Shutdown and restart

This time the menu shows the Easy Version number
and it's repackaging the q.sfs as I set it to do, veryyyyyyy slow though even if it does say it's Parallel mksquashfs: Using 2 processors (maybe the stick is on the way out as i've had it for a while).

And that xine problem from the last release seems to have dissapeared as the anime dvd started correctly first time
Also the music levels are clearer and a better quality.

Cold Boot shows version ok and seems to go on to jwm,
Loads devx/firefox sfs's ok (already downloaded)

Spoke too soon, it's having problems with the dvd drive and reading the video dvd in it, although it eventually sorts itself out and behaves it clearly hunts for some time before stoping and displaying a cd symbol.

And firefox is hopelessly slow to start from menu, gives an error when start via a console screen too, i'll look at it later.

Good start though, I shall test more when i get up again, like Thunderbird, build latest hplip 3.18.10 (big bugfixes and new devices), Xmahjongg to start with.

It might be 1500 now, but i've been up and on since 2100 last night chasing problems for others, and my typing is full of errors and having to being fixed as I finish a line.
I need sleep.
So much for being retired!

EDIT: I woke up with a thought that I wonder if the problem with the dvd drive is the driver or the chipset, I shall see what it is and list it in this message tomorrow when i'm totally awake.

EDIT2: As promised

It's a Dell Optiplex 745 USFF which has a Intel® Q965 (ICH8) Express Chipset (82Q965/ 82801H Pair)https://www.manualslib.com/manual/624327/Dell-Optiplex-745.html (https://www.manualslib.com/manual/624327/Dell-Optiplex-745.html) if you need it but use the one on the right, it's the size of a decent dictionary.

And for the dvd drive problem, it's not working when you start with a cd/dvd already in, just seems to error and fails with the cd in, but is ok if you add the cd/dvd after easy is already up.

EDIT3: for ff problem (calls itself Nightly for some reason)

in Preferances I have set

>Under General> Unticked Startup to always check if Nightly is your default browser
>Under General> Unticked automatically update search engines

> Under Privacy and Security> Tracking Protection> Always
and "do not track" signal> always os marked
>Under Permissions> Prevent accessability services from accessing your browser is now ticked (there is a readme worth reading)

> You need to opt_out under Nightly for automatically allowing then Nightly Data Collection and Use your data, but the related area is blue'd out in Preferances . HM, mozilla's webnpage seems to say this shouldn't be so
> It also says there should be Firefox Updates section, which isn't there.

I'm going to unload and delete the ff I have at this point. Too many things not making sense for now, sorry barry.

EDIT4: Tried downloading ff with SFSget came down ok and installed into it's own container. Only initial comment is that sfsget is shuting down when the package is down and therefore must be restarted and set up again for each package. A nusance for those wanting a number of them, I wanted to d/l and try chromium(, which I haven't used since, I think, it came out of beta). can this auto-shutdown of SFSget not happen please, or is it needed for the install part to happen.

No, don't like this Nightly thing, it's not the ff I know and love, I shall d/l ff from moz and see what gives, maybe I shall have to work with an old ff version.

And firefox is hopelessly slow to start from menu, gives an error when start via a console screen too, i'll look at it later.

Are you using a slow flash stick? That is the usual culprit. Did you use easydd to write to the stick, and what speed did it report?  -- in my case, I am using sticks that have at least 20MB/sec sustained write speed, and get reasonable responsiveness when running Easy.

Before releasing 0.9.8, I clicked on "sfsget" and downloaded Chromium, installed into a container, it created a desktop icon, clicked that and Chromium started fast.

Did not test Firefox, but that reminds me, SeaMonkey had a slow startup in a container, that I posted about recently:

http://bkhome.org/news/201810/seamonkey-delay-at-startup-fixed.html

This is fixed in the SM package, however, as FF is built from same code, it likely has the same problem. Make the change in the Preferences, see if that fixes it.

Um, no, I just tested it. Installed FF in a container, clicked the desktop icon, FF started within one second.

We are back to you maybe having a very slow flash stick.

Responsiveness also depends on whether q.sfs got copied into ram at startup, or just loaded from the flash stick.

Running "losetup -a" in a terminal should reveal which.

In my case, q.sfs is not being loaded into ram, as the 'init' script in initrd determined that the flash stick is fast enough.

I downloaded chromium and after that selected existing option. However no chromium browser at my desktop or menu. Even after rebooting, no chromium. What went wrong ?. Like wise download Firefox SFS and selected container. Got desktop Firefox with container. However there's a delay in starting. In my opinion it is not fast as 0.9.7.  my requirements is to install chromium with or without container.

Frugal install to laptop HDD. No problems, easiest one so far. I've setup wifi connection with nmtui, which was straightforward. Had been using SNS on last version, and this was quite stable. It has been on recent Woof-CE builds that I've had problems with dropped connections, although PeasyWifi had always solved this.
SM in container connects to internet, and also got a 'ping' via the console container.

losetup is showing it's loading from .q_ro for q.sfs and /mnt/sdb2 for devx and firefox.

Other answers in earlier message as EDIT2 and EDIT3, the firefox problem wories me, almost as if a 'modified' version is up there.

"existing" was not an appropriate choice. That is to insert the sfs into an already existing container. I will have to provide more guidance in that window - - basicall say, if in doubt, choose to run in a new container.

@BarryK I can see distinct changes in behavior. Nice.

One thing I feel is helpful to many is a similar/same implementation of the Network icon on the taskbar that @01Micko introduced several years ago that is used by all WOOFCE PUPs. That icon implementation allows a mouse-over to see LAN connection and traffic.

I was just bitten spending too much time chasing the system only to find my network cable had popped out. It would have been evident in a mouse-over on a mainline PUP.

If you think it a helpful addition, of course.

There are some aspects of the GUI management that are not yet handled. In your case, go to /mnt/wkg/sfs/easyos/oe/pyro and delete chromium_69.0.3497.100-bk3_amd64.sfs

Do not delete the .specs and .png files.

Then run "sfsget" again (icon on desktop).

There was one report of the Internet disconnecting when a container was killed. I think the person was using firefox.

Anyway, yes, THIS IS A BUG!

Killing a container also kills 'dhcpcd', the DHCP client daemon, which disables the Internet.

NetworkManager does not bring it back up automatically, although NM is in control of dhcpcd.

If for example, your interface is 'eth0', then just bring it down, pause a few seconds, then bring it up again:

# ifonfig eth0 down
# ifconfig eth0 up

This kicks NM into action and it launches dhcpcd again.

I think that I know a fix, will look into it tomorrow morning.

Another issue is that there's problem in new network manager. Stastic connection. Many times it gets disconnected. Need configuration again. Another issue about. Not having enough sound. Very low volume.
As regards Chromium install, I will try again as advised by you. Thank you so much for timely response.

Nightly firefox problem.

I couldn't delete the ffox container through setup> sfsget, it gave warnings relating to RO files and directories and errored/bombed out. Finally got rid of it manually by firstly unloading it with  System> Bootmanager Configure bootup> Load extra SFS in containers button> Choose container to manage> and Delete Container (which brings up a easy missable and hard to read box, as it has no border and is the same colours as the page behind it)>  Easy Containers: delete box. This doesn't seem to actually delete the container or ffox's sfs, just the icon on jwm. You then still need to manually delete the ffox container under /containers and the ffox sfs from the sfs directory /sfs/easyos/oe/pyro to get rid of it. Since it was installed via sfsget I sort of expected to get rid of it the same way, maybe i'm just use to the way petget works too well.

Also tried to create a new (empty) container through Easy Container Management> Create box. Sorry barry but I couldn't work out how to name a new one (for a yet uncreated package) to build in? Is there some instructions available as I wanted to try to build something since you have qt5 in the build. And even using expert and the help '?''s I couldn't see how. I thought you could use the container management to build the container and then build the new application in it, so you could totally isolate the application and its build system parts/steps from the overall 'world'.

And of course I do want to build a nano-x sfs for easy.

And a third (doing them separate for ease of process as they really are different problem topics).

On a fresh stick build and different workstation, I tried to connect to the internet and it refused. A little looking made me understand it was trying to connect via wifi, not my ethernet port to the outside world. I had to use the nmtui NetworkManager TUI program to Edit a connection> Delete the WIFI connection shown (which doesn't actually exist on the box the memory stick was plugged into)>  back out 1 level> Pick add (need to move the tab or up/down arrows for a red box to be displayed first for some reason with each new screen displayed) so it could display a menu containing Ethernet> Pick that and tab to ok (ignoring the rest) to add the correct connection.

There is also a dir2sfs problem i've added in the apps sub-forum

I have used this several times over the last few days, to delete containers, and it has worked fine. It also handles currently-running containers.

SFSget is in early stage of development, not aware of already-installed containers. You need to get it to start again -- delete /mnt/wkg/sfs/puppy/ubuntu/xenial/xenialpup_7.5_amd64.sfs, do not delete anything else. Then run sfsget.

Yeah, went that way with chromium and that went away cleanly, but the nightly ff wouldn't, suspect it's because of all the backlinks.

Re: the dvd drive problem I commented on earlier.

If I have the drive closed with a dvd in when starting up, it's basically failingto load 99% of the time.
But if the dvd door is open (it's one of those narrow ones you manually shut), or if their is no dvd in the drive until after easy's jwm is loaded
I can shut the door/load a dvd and it picks up it's in and eventually loads.

I wonder if it's a driver timing problem? I shall pull a xerrs.log out later today and see if there is any help there.

> Yeah from a quick look at it, there are a few things in the xerrs.log that you may be interested in having a look at.
I'll attach it later in case it gives you clues on the other problems listed as I don't have a spare usb port to move it with on that box at present.

I have been using an internal "full size" dvd drive without issues.

Well, except that when I press the button on the drive to open the tray, it opens, then closes a few seconds later -- I have to pull the media out very quickly.

Have been working on the SFS infrastructure, should have it "finalized" by 0.9.9, fingers crossed.

This morning I was sorting out how to handle when layers change in a container. In the main filesystem, this is handled reasonably well, that is, detection if, say, the devx sfs is inserted or removed. The init script in the initrd does some checking, a bit more after the switch_root. There are things that need to be fixed when the layers change.

This morning also, integrated NetworkManager so that it is part of the other managers (SNS, Frisabee, etc). That is, the old ones are not thrown out, so if you prefer one of those, they are still available.

And, have added ModemManager package, that works with NetworkManager.

No an internal one, details and link for it are back on page1 - message2, it's the one on the right side of the manual.

I've had that near-immediate closing before when the drive hasn't properly 'turned the motor off' before opening the door. I think I remember that you put a wait in somewhere.

xerrs.log as promised attached in my post above.

@ Barry

thank you very much for refining the initial password managing which seems to work fine in EasyOs 0.9.8 also on non-US keyboards!

However, fine-tuning of the keyboard-layout still proves to be tricky and to result in unexpected effects. As for the sg (Swiss German) layout, using the Quick Setup manager, the appropriate layout can be selected which alas only works correctly in the main desktop, the containerised Seamonkey (www), and in the containerised console (sakura) but not in the containerised desktop and the containerised xenialpup! In the latter ones (despite basically the sg layout is set) the right alt key - usually used as third-level chooser - initially shows no effect, and all my attempts at fine-tuning via the XKB-manager seem to confuse the container management in a manner which I so far cannot fully understand. If I'm able to activate one of the alt keys as third-level chooser, the containerised desk may freeze and no longer respond to the alt-F6 command. In the containerised xenialpup, attempts at using the XKB manager are responded by an error message (your xorg.conf file does not contain any XkbLayout options!). Sometimes, after unsuccessfully fiddling with the XKB manager, simultaneously pressing 'left alt-2' combination (actually intending to activate @) results in flipping back to the main desktop.

Furthermore, after entering the desk- or xenialpup-container and flipping back via pressing alt-F6, these applications appear as little squares in the applet-tray, remaining there until they are closed manually (right mouse button). Clicking the left mouse button relaunches the containerised applications.

In summary, different containers seem to use different - partially interfering - keyboard-layout settings.

sorry for being unable to better explain the above-mentioned issues!

@ Barry,

after I read your most recent post on bkhome.org/news/, I'm asking myself how far the (above-mentioned) different keyboard-layout handling in various containers might be due to the 'layer-handling' issue whose elimination already seems to be on your to-do list.

kind regards

However, as a side effect, this cdrom problem seems to have dissapeared, it is now quite happy to show the cdrom drive with a cdrom in it . I shall reboot and shutdown/startup again later and see if it's really gone away, but with 20 reboots I thnk it may have. I wonder why.

The problems shown in the xerrs.log (now in ?6 messages above) are still appearing though.

EDIT1: and that dissapearing cdrom icon has reapeared, rightclick on cdrom icon and the icon dissapears with nothing happening to the cdrom.

new problem.

How do I open a rpm to see what's inside?

I can install it (even if I don't want too), but not open it to see the content.

To install easyos on my micro SD card in my netbook is an issue, when an another linux distro is installed on the internal harddrive (sda1,sda2) of my netbook. That means the installation fails because during boot up it reads also the internal hard drive. Although it is ext4. To install easyos on my micro SD card, on my netbook, I have tot format the internal hard drive (sda1, ext4). That means, the linux distr on hard drive is gone. When done, easyos can be installed on my micro SD card in my netbook. What did I do wrong?

Finally found time to test 0.9.8. Installed to usb to test.

Initial boot same issues as 0.9.7 it boots to a black screen with a cursor (not even blinking) in top left corner. Also keyboard unresponsive. I hard rebooted to commandline and ran xorgwizard to set intel but nothing changed.

Reinstalled to usb and on initial boot went direct to commandline. In both cases I left password blank. Ran xorgwizard, same result. Rebooted to commandline and this time manually renamed 20-intel-sna.confDISABLED to 20-intel-sna.conf.

Rebooted and it went to a desktop (sort of) telling me that my pinboard is probably an old version. No icons except drives all stacked on top of each other. I remember this also happening with 0.9.7.

Ran internet connection wizard and chose frisbee and no wireless networks found at all. Tried other option and same thing.

That's as far as I got.

Awkward situation!

It looks like you need to get it to use the 20-intel-sna.conf at first bootup of the pristine system.

So, booting up a new pristine usb with Easy 0.9.8, choose to stop at commandline, not run X.

Once at the commandline:

# mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel-sna.confDISABLED /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel-sna.conf
# xorgwizard

...then choose Intel driver.

If I recall rightly though, I thought that I had already implemented that choice in Xorg Wizard, to use SNS or UXA acceleration for Intel.
If that is the case, you wouldn't have to do the "mv".

Many time LAN (static wired ) not getting internet connection. In some occasion firefox will have internet connection and other browsers not having. Anyway internet connection is not  stable at all. I have deleted  chromium SFS as advised by Barry Sir and tried to install again through SFS package manger. However, not able to install due to some error. After some trail and error I have install chromium in the container after download the same again. Why download required again?. If required,  is it possible to  install program with SFS file without container option in Easyos ?.  Sometime SFS packet manager shows some errors. Is it due to lack of internet connection or some other technical glitches ?.  Waiting eagerly for  Easyos 0.9.9

Barry, that is exactly what I ended up doing. After that I could get to a desktop but that's when I get the message about obsolete rox pinboard.

I know 0.9.8 is old/obsolite now, but i'm chasing a 'nefarious' problem affecting only one of my test workstations and need that devx.

I can't find it anywhere.

Is it hidden somewhere online Barry please?

It's gone. I hunted through my archives, I have 0.9.7.3 and 0.9.9, but not 0.9.8 devx.

Blast! as it's the last version that didn't have the video shutter problem with seamonkey, I was hoping to try building a few other browsers and versions and see if it remained ok or not. Problem is that ocassionally the bottom half of the screen starts shuttering, not all of it, just the bottom half! I have to close the browser to fix it, a refresh, etc. doesn't help!.

0.9.7 is OK, 0.9.10+ fails after a short time.
