<place holder> lol
md5sum ok
frugality into folder on sda
booted wifi connected with default connector posted this from seamonkey not in container

even though now there is an easy.sfs there is still a initrid.q and a Q_DISTRO_VERSION=0.9.9 in bootspecs file :)
taking a break before attempting to download xenalpup to boot in container

(https://image.ibb.co/nhvuAV/capture1388.png)

didnt download it just copied the whole ubuntu folder from 098 where i had curl downloaded it previousy . 099 doesnt have an ubuntu folder
posted from xenialpup which uses the original wifi connection no need to make a new connection in xenialpup.
up arrow in xenialpup is opening screeny07 instead of going up . other than that seems ok
<going to put image of new sfsget with install button here when i go back to  easyos
ok here it is (https://image.ibb.co/kRZbPq/install-xenialpup.jpg)>

can switch back and forth between xenialpup and easyos without problem.
so success. over and out for now

Not sure why, but the temp gauge in the Tray is sitting HOT at 48/49deg and I can hear the fan spinning fairly fast, should be the low 30's as in the past.
Not a good thing for an old system.

Oh, and please, can we have somewhere other than google being pinged at startup. I think there are enough of us with a dislike of that idea to at least be considered, thanks.

And i'm still getting that "Failed to open VDPAU Backend libvdpau_i965.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory" in the xerrs.log, in fact I can't find a libvdpau_i965.so file with a full search. Was the package missed or should it be a link to libvdpau.so.1 in /usr/lib and there is no /usr/lib/libvdpau.so either?

EDIT: Tried an old stick with 0.9.6 on it and it runs 37deg on startup then drops after a few seconds to 32deg, so something has changed to up the temp.

AND, i was downloading the devx for 0.9.9, but it seems to have downloaded them all, in /sfs/easyos/oe/pyro I have .specs and the sfs files for chromium_69.0.3497.100-bk4_amd64, devx_0.9.9_amd64, easy_0.0.0_amd64, firefox_60.0.1_amd64, kernel_4.14.81-p1_src and rustc_1.2.6.0_amd64. ???oops??? ir were they included in the img?

Temp in the tray has finally dropped to stabalize at 48deg while writing this message (38min overall) and it was doing nothing other than downloading.

EDIT2: yeah, downloading ups it by a degree to 49, stopping and letting it rest just drops it back to 48.

After creating the two .so file links I mentioned as missing in the last message;

I did a full shutdown;

On power restart, it started rebuilding the easy.sfs (I had forgotten I set it to do this) but wondering why it's rebuilding it from xz to gz;

in xerrs.log the complaints re libvdpau arn't showing;

however i'm now getting>
.
.
(==) Using system config directory "/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d"
server does not have extension for "r rate" option
libpng warning: Interlace handling should be turned on when using png_read_image
libpng warning: iCCP: known incorrect sRGB profile

Can't open configured filke, deleting configuration file
"/sys/devices/platform/coretemp.0/hwmon/hwmon0/temp2_input" is written to :

3448
xf86: remove device 0 /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:02.0/drm/card0
failed to find screen to remove

EDIT: BLAST, all I seem to have done is moved the vdpau errors to show up after the dvd is started, however i'm now getting a new error that may be of help.

After the "Failed to open VDPAU backend libvdpau_i965.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory" line
i'm now getting "vo_vdpau: Can't create vdp device : No vdpau implementation."

EDIT2: According to the vdpau page on wikipedia.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VDPAU (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VDPAU)
Quote
The libvdpau standalone VDPAU library is distributed by Nvidia independently of their proprietary Linux graphics driver in an effort to help the adoption of VDPAU by those outside of Nvidia. This open source library package contains a wrapper library and a debugging library allowing other manufacturers to implement VDPAU in their device drivers.

website https://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/VDPAU/ (https://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/VDPAU/). Although the last release 1.1.1 is 2015, I think they must be about to release another as there has been some work in the git in the last 5 days.

EDIT3: and there is a dir2sfs problem. so I updated the problem in apps with it.

i figure that easyos/quirky is sponsored by the american gun loby hence we have xsoldier in every release. i use the remove builtin packages to get rid of it.
ace of penguins, pipe-panic and klines-5ball-gtkballs are fine by me and i copy the folders for these into easyos since i cant install anything with package manager due to no space on partition error

Thanks BK. System is stable.

Kodi demo you provide is nice and in your blog you provide good explanation of the approach and feature of your SFS processing. (sent you a note on it)

I have no problem with your method of determining "Internet" presence and find your selection a good one as the remainder of us KNOW that your selection is one of the sites which is ALWAYS UP!

Thanks for what you share with us.

And, to be a nusance,

That Dissapearing CD icon from the desktop is still there, even when a cd is inserted in the drive if you accidentally right-click it once;

And I just realized that when using the tray button to turn off the internet connection, the red X (change of icon) isn't appearing.

Curious1: Should "EASY Version Control Utility" be expanded to do EASY version updating to either a new USB or the existing one?

Curious2: Consistent with ScsiJon's prior post, I wonder if @01Micko's LAN tray icon feature on the taskbar could be utilized in future EASY? It reports the current IP address in a mouse-over versus a CPU intensive click for a utility to do so.

Curious (Far-Future): Is the new WOOF & its DEVX a candidate for a container "for EASY/QUIRKY generation" where that service is outside of (separated from) the HOST's operations?

Lastly, related to the picture attached
Should the alert in the picture, attached to this post, be a message which times out?

Frugal boot 0.9.9
Start Easy Container ... as usual the ALT-F6 message appears in the centre of screen
Alt-F6 to main desktop
Connect Android phone via USB
Open Menu, Network, Easy Share network and printers
Check/tick the Android option and run Scan
Initially not found, but my phone prompts to activate Developer Mode (answer yes)
Rescan and finds the phone (I can then click the mount option and view the phones folders) ... but at that point, flipping back to the Easy Desktop container ... and the Alt-F6 message has disappeared. Would be nice if that persisted as it generally does as its a visual reminder you're running in a container.

Repeating ... and it looks like opening network shares restarts the firewall (ALT-F6 message still present), then it does a probe ... at which point the ALT-F6 message has gone.

Cursory glance through /usr/sbin/easyshare indicates some occurrences of killall popup ... one of which I suspect may also be killing the ALT-F6 message/popup ? Perhaps the Alt-F6 message needs to be something other than a popup message ?
Title: Rollback depth
Post by: rufwoof on November 26, 2018, 04:25:00 PM
I'm running frugal with the default settings for Rollback (that shows 3). Yet I've created 6 rollbacks (7 in total including the first system created one) that seem to be preserved (sfs files in /mnt/sda1/easy/easy-0.9.9/releases/easy-0.9.9 i.e. doesn't seem to be removing the oldest versions to keep the maximum number down to 3. Or have I misunderstood the 'depth' value meaning?

i have installed Firefox through SFSget and selected option  as Main file system. Rebooted the system. In the menu entry was created for Firefox with container symbol. . However, unable to launch even after clicking the menu entry with container symbol.  Also note that no desktop icon for Firefox was found. Likewise, tried to launch through command in console with container. No effect. Then tried in console without container. This time Firefox launched !.  As a trail and errors efforts, I have removed container (ch-root) something from Menu Entry. Now Firefox starting from Menu option !.

Not good. I rebuilt all the sfs files for 0.9.9 release, as there were some changes to the internal meta-data inside the sfs.

You have found a bug.

I had never intended that Chromium or Firefox SFSs would be installed to the main filesystem, only a container. When installed to main f.s., the menu entry is wrong. Will investigate this.

When I tried installing xenial sfs via sfsget, it installed OK but when started the wallpaper was full of icons looking images. When I rolled back the main session to remove that it still left the container icon on the desktop (not much of a issue as I just right click/removed that).

New bug in the EASYshare Utility

Scenario
Some of us (and maybe you too) can/do share resources from this machine to others on the LAN. This is normal. And the resources we share is defined in /etc/samba/smb.conf. For all of each PC, the resources that are shared of unique from THAT PC.

In some cases that could be 1 resource defined (like say a printer) in the config file or it could me many resources of folders, printers, DVD drives, etc.).

EASYshare is suppose to facilitate our needs to do so. BUT ...

Problem
I have just discovered that when "WE" provide our custom smb.conf, EASYshare is taking it upon itself to either invalidate our own smb.conf or to limit the provided smb.conf file we provide.

This is NOT a smb design criterion of a 26 year-old subsystem, rather it is a bug in utility design. Utilities are NOT suppose to taper with existing smb.conf. The Puppy based utility that @01Micko, @TaZoC and @MikeB have built addressed this perfectly as does all other known Linux smb utilities.

Help when you can.

0.9.9: USB wouldn't boot at all until (Gigabyte board) set BIOS from Legacy to Legacy+UEFI.
First issue - I try never to use UEFI kit. Don't do laptops.
Second issue - after resetting BIOS, USB was still flashing away until ~10mins. switch off machine.

Only wanted to demonstrate Easy to a friend. Both left disappointed...

?Container Isolation?

Barry, how much isolation should be working between different containers?

I'm finding errors appearing in the xerrs.log when I'm starting and loading the same program (but different datasets) in the main and containerized desktops.

In both cases the application I was using had been separately installed (build and pet'd with src2pet) in the individual Main and Desktop Containers.

The error relates to a conflict of resources and causes the package to crash, requiring a pprocess manager kill.

For now i've removed it and notified the gnome developer of the problem, but wonder if it's actually our end.

I've sorted out the libvdpau problem to>

a link creation typo (sorry my fault but it wasn't there to start with) for libvdpau_i965.so, wonder if there should also be some for i915, etc.;

libvdpau seems to be missing some 'parts' (undefined symbol: vdp_imp_device_create_x11) and others;

no vdpau implementation in i965_drv_video.so, so no __vaDriverInit_1_0, needed to work with va_openDriver();

Also>

libdvdread is warning it "could not open aufs with libdvdcss", and so "CSS authentication not available", even though I was online at the time.

There is this page, though it is not specifically for frugal install:

Although it can be figured out from thos docs, it would be much better if I write a tutorial. Hope to do so soon.

Sir I have installed easyos 0.9.9 in internal internal disk (Full) by creating   FAT partition and working partition.  Is it possible to install frugal method in new PC having secure boot environment. Earlier occasion, you have promised to come up with new idea.

a link creation typo (sorry my fault but it wasn't there to start with) for libvdpau_i965.so, wonder if there should also be some for i915, etc.;
I've updated this with>

Also
libdvdread is warning it "could not open aufs with libdvdcss", and so "CSS authentication not available", even though I was online at the time.

Needed some stuff from the origonal version installed to the hard drive and found it was 0.9.1. Looking at the xerrs.log, found it didn't have show the above errors in it. I'll build a stick with 0.9.6 this evening and see what that reports.

EDIT1: yup, in 0.9.6. and 0.9.5 both show as
Code: [Select]
cdromreadraw: Input/output error
Failed to open VDPAU backend libvdpau_i965.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
vo_vdpau: Can't create vdp device : No vdpau implementation.
I'll download some earlier ones and report here.

EDIT2: 0.9.4 seems to be working ok, however it's reporting a slightly different error in lines 27 to 34
Code: [Select]
cdromreadraw: Input/output error
libva info: VA-API version 0.39.4
libva info: va_getDriverName() returns 0

libva info: va_openDriver() returns -1
vo_vdpau: Failed to check vdpau get/put bits native capability : VDP_STATUS_NO_IMPLEMENTATION

i'll do the 0.9.8 to 0.9.7 tomorrow (could't find a 0.9.2 though to try)?
EDIT3: 0.9.7  and 0.9.7 both give>
Code: [Select]
cdromreadraw: Input/output error

libva error: /usr/lib/dri/i965_drv_video.so has no function __vaDriverInit_1_0

Looking at hardinfo, it seems to be set for nvidea only. Is this on purpose, as I have a i965 video controller? There doesn't seem a way to change it either.

BUG in taskbar icon utility
Problem:  I know other reports, but I have another: When clicked to Disconnect, then Reconnect at some point later, the system becomes "unroute-able".
Circumvention: Menu>Setup>Internect Connection Wizard>insure you click SNS on the right>click LAN... on the left>click Eth0>Click SNS>upon success your system can now route and browser(s) can, again, work.

Could we please have @01Micko's facility?

I did some fault hunting against the  VDPAU bugs (from reply no's #26 and #27 above) and came across this
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libvdpau/+bug/1300215 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libvdpau/+bug/1300215) as the best explanation, which
seems to explain a lot. It's a big read but explains things, especially replies #39 and #42.

Most versions of linux seem to have come across this problem, such as>

https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=869815 (https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=869815) for i965
https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/195416/failed-to-open-vdpau-backend-nouveau (https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/195416/failed-to-open-vdpau-backend-nouveau) for nouveau
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1008250-start-0.html (https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1008250-start-0.html) for nvidea;
and
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=166593 (https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=166593) seems to deal with both.

And this https://bugzilla.rpmfusion.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2633 (https://bugzilla.rpmfusion.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2633) might be a headache (especially what it says in description).

Sorry for the long readings, but with the 'mess' this problem seems to bring everyone, I thought it worth it.

However how your going to do it in easy to cover all situations, i'm not sure.

@scsijon,
I have compiled a more recent /usr/lib/dri/i965_drv_video.so, package intel-vaapi-driver version 2.2.0.

Discovered that it is necessary to set this: VDPAU_DRIVER=va_gl

So, with both changes, and no symlinks created anywhere:

Code: [Select]
# export VDPAU_DRIVER=va_gl
# xine 20051210-w50s.flv
This is xine (X11 gui) - a free video player v0.99.10.
(c) 2000-2014 The xine Team.
libva info: VA-API version 1.1.0
libva info: va_getDriverName() returns 0
libva info: Trying to open /usr/lib/dri/i965_drv_video.so
libva info: Found init function __vaDriverInit_1_1
libva info: va_openDriver() returns 0
vo_vdpau: Failed to check vdpau get/put bits native capability : VDP_STATUS_NO_IMPLEMENTATION
libva info: VA-API version 1.1.0
libva info: va_getDriverName() returns 0
libva info: Trying to open /usr/lib/dri/i965_drv_video.so
libva info: Found init function __vaDriverInit_1_1
libva info: va_openDriver() returns 0

This fix will be in 0.9.10.

Live DVD on all 64bit desktop systems
Thanks BK for looking forward to providing an ISO. In PUPPY's past, it has always provided excellent options for its use as well as "the benefit" you share in your blog.

I know its not for everyone, but it does give users all the past PUPPY options.
This would cover ALL user use selections and its advantages, just as it has always done for your PUPPY users in past times.

Thanks, again, BK; for what you do for our usage benefits.

Thank you very much, Barry, for creating an Easy Live-CD!!

In order to combine the "running totally in RAM" and the "save"-options, I will try to configure an Easy Life-flash stick, according to the method which I previously described in the Quirky-thread for Quirky Xerus 8.6.

As I meanwhile realised, not all of the GParted versions are equally suitable for appropriately partitioning the flash stick after the iso-file is copied onto it. Using GParted 0.30.0, (in Quirky Beaver 8.7.1) for example, I was not able to configure a Quirky Beaver 8.7.1 live-flash stick, but, running Quirky Xerus 8.4.1 and using GParted 0.25.0 worked fine.

The Easy iso variant, for sure, will be highly appreciated!

kind regards

http://distro.ibiblio.org/quirky/quirky6/amd64/releases/xerus-8.5/xerus64-8.5.iso

and its fully functional to boot IIRC

got to be one of them because i have never done a liveCD as i have no cdplayer and havent even done a USB install  of any recent stuff

Presistence: This is what Barry refers in his blog dated December 04, 2018
I am no expert in design, but unlike MS, Linux has the "rsync" command which, among many other things, can do things based upon timestamp(s).

File backup strategies are broken down into 3 main categories: Full, Incremental, and Differential.

I often wondered why PUPPY used 2 different approaches for persistence...especially in modern times? The approaches are seen in how it is done to DVDs vs how its done to Frugals.

Without sighting all the specific details in PUP's implementation, its incremental backup approach used, remains to this day the best and most security minded approach to doing backup and restoring when shutdown/booting. The timestamping used in persistence to DVDs is the example. If it covers the best overall approach, AND, can work to, both, DVD as well as to Frugals, why not settle on that single and effective approach??? After all "rsync & compress" for persistence during Backup-Shutdown AND for persistence during Bootup-Restoing "deconpress & rsync" would cover boot+shutdown needs both now and into all futures.  Thus, presenting a single persistent solution for DVD/Fruga (i.e. "RAM based operation')l use when EASY is shutdown/started.

Less work on the developers because there is one simple solution ... less work on user understanding and their deduction of what occurs at shutdown and what to look for in bootup.

Is this too simple for adding PUPPY/EASY OS persistence? Or is that too EASY (smiling)?

P.S. I must admit, though, that I do find the recent change in Frugal to "save to folder" a great advantage for  HDD/SSD/USB persistence. It does not offer the timestamped session advantage, but is great in its clarity, understanding and performance.

Reviewed the Persistence instructions for ISO boot

I understand the "Disklabel type:" shown in the displays of fdisk -l. And I am aware of BK's requirement for "DOS" disk (no matter if USB or HDD or SSD).

I wonder: IFF the intent is to facilitate RAM boot operations & persistence, could the Persistence steps be an EASY application which carries out the procedure shown in the blog "Permanent saving for EasyOS live-CD"?

Something akin to that would provide a safe guide in a single screen app for any user to achieve what is desired for persistence.

Just a thought
